Finland's preliminary population figure 5,429,894 at the end of February

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of February was 5,429,894. Over the January to February period, Finland's population increased by 2,750 persons, which is 450 persons more than in the preliminary data for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 2,400 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 350 persons.

Population increase by month 2011–2013*

According to the preliminary statistics for the January to February period, 4,600 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 2,200 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 400 higher and the number of emigrants 50 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,050 of the immigrants and 1,600 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to February period 9,300 children were born, which is 450 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 8,950, which is 400 lower than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 35,750 over the January to February period. Compared with the previous January to February period, the decrease was 650 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
