Number of births has fallen in three successive years
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, 58,120 children were born in Finland in 2013. The number of births fell for the third year in a row. Migration gain from abroad is an ever greater factor in the growing number of the population, because as much as 71 per cent of the population growth was migration gain. In 2013, the population of our country grew by 23,940 persons, which is 1,470 fewer than in 2012. The preliminary population figure at the end of 2013 was 5,450,614.
Population increase by month 2011–2013*
According to the preliminary statistics for 2013, 30,300 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 13,300 persons emigrated from Finland. Migration gain from international migration was thus 17,000 persons. The number of immigrants was 980 lower and the number of emigrants 550 lower than in the previous year. In all, 7,860 of the immigrants and 9,280 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the year, 58,120 children were born, which is 1,370 fewer and 2.3 per cent lower than in 2012. The number of deaths was 51,190, being 520 persons fewer and 1.0 per cent lower than one year earlier. Natural population increase, or excess of births to deaths, was 6,940 persons.
According to the preliminary data, the number of intermunicipal migrations totalled 265,070 in 2013. Intermunicipal migration decreased by 10,900 persons compared to the year before according to the municipal division of 2013.
According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in the following regions in 2013: Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Ostrobothnia, Pohjois-Savo, Central Finland, Åland, Central Ostrobothnia and Kanta-Häme.

Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Uusimaa, 11.5 per mil. Relative population growth was second largest in Pirkanmaa, 7.1 per mil. Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Etelä-Savo that lost 930 persons of its population. The population of Kainuu decreased by 700 persons, which was the second biggest population loss. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Kainuu, 8.7 per mil and the second largest in Etelä-Savo, 6.1 per mil.
Most migration gain from intramunicipal and international migration was collected by Uusimaa, 11,350 persons and Pirkanmaa, 2,500 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms was also attained by Uusimaa, 7.2 per mil and by Pirkanmaa, 5.0 per mil. In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the region of Kainuu, 430 persons, and the region of Lapland, 220 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was found in the region of Kainuu, 5.4 per mil and the second largest in Central Ostrobothnia, 2.1 per mil of the population.
During 2013, migration between regions numbered 122,290. The highest gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi, Pohjois-Savo and Åland. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 4,170 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1,550 persons. In both regions, the relative migration gain was also highest; 3.1 per mil of the population in Pirkanmaa and 2.6 per mil in Uusimaa.
