Finland's preliminary population figure 5,453,784 at the end of February
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of February was 5,453,784. Over the January to February period, Finland's population increased by 2,500 persons, which is 300 persons fewer than in the preliminary data for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 2,000 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 500 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2014*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to February period, 4,200 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 2,200 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 650 lower and the number of emigrants 50 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,050 of the immigrants and 1,550 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to February period, 9,100 children were born, which is 200 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 8,600, which is 500 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 34,600 over the January to February period. Compared with the previous January to February period, the decrease was 1,350 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
