Finland's preliminary population figure 5,458,038 at the end of May
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of May was 5,458,038. Over the January to May period, Finland's population increased by 6,750 persons, which is 1,600 persons fewer than for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 5,150 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 1,600 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2014*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to May period, 10,400 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 5,200 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,450 lower and the number of emigrants 250 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,700 of the immigrants and 3,400 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to May period, 23,600 children were born, which is 500 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 22,000, which is 600 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 91,850 over the January to May period. Compared with the previous January to May period, the decrease was 1,950 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
