Finland's preliminary population figure 5,462,939 at the end of July
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of July was 5,462,939. Over the January to July period, Finland's population increased by 11,670 persons, which is 2,330 persons fewer than for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 8,370 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 3,300 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2014*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to July period, 15,740 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 7,370 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,660 lower and the number of emigrants 210 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 4,770 of the immigrants and 4,750 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to July period, 33,720 children were born, which is 520 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 30,420, which is 60 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 140,170 over the January to July period. Compared with the previous January to July period, the decrease was 2,260 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
