Finland's preliminary population figure 5,491,817 at the end of May
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,491,817 at the end of May. Our country's population increased by 4,509 persons during January-May. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 5,636. The number of births was 1,127 lower than that of deaths.
Population increase by month 2013–2016*
During January-May, 22,033 children were born, which is 700 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2015. The number of deaths was 23,160, which is 448 higher than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary statistics for May, 11,195 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 5,559 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,091 higher and the number of emigrants 603 less than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,603 of the immigrants and 3,805 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 96,144 during January-May. Compared with the previous January-May, the decrease was 952 migrations according to the municipal division of 2016.
