Manufacturing boosted growth in the environmental goods and services sector in 2020
The turnover from Finland's environmental goods and services sector was EUR 43 billion in 2020. Good 170,000 staff-years were made in the environmental goods and services sector. The value of exports was EUR 10 billion and value added over EUR 16 billion, which is eight per cent of the value added of the entire national economy. The turnover of manufacturing from the environmental goods and services sector was EUR 12.5 billion. It grew by six per cent from the previous year, which boosted the growth of the entire environmental goods and services sector. These data derive from Statistics Finland’s statistics on the environmental goods and services sector.
Turnover of the environmental goods and services sector by industry 2019 and 2020, billion euros
The turnover of the biggest industry of the environmental goods and services sector, construction, was in 2020 good EUR 15 billion, which was one-third of the whole environmental goods and services sector. Nearly 66,000 staff-years were worked in construction and its value added was almost EUR five billion. The environmental goods and services sector in construction consists mainly of energy-efficient solutions.
The growth in the environmental goods and services sector in manufacturing was driven by the chemical industry. Its turnover has doubled in a few years, being nearly EUR three billion in 2020. The growth is due to increased production of renewable energy sources.
When comparing the whole national economy, the growth of the environmental goods and services sector in manufacturing is noteworthy in the corona year 2020 because as a whole industrial output fell clearly. In contrast, the turnover of service industries also fell in the environmental goods and services sector in the wake of the whole economy, but its share is under 10 per cent of all environmental goods and services.
In 2020, the majority of the turnover from the environmental goods and services sector, 85 per cent, was connected to resource management and the remaining 15 per cent to environmental protection. The clearly biggest product category of the environmental goods and services sector was management of energy resources with a turnover of nearly EUR 24 billion. The second largest product categories were management of minerals, the turnover being EUR five billion and waste water management with a turnover of over EUR three billion. Management of energy resource comprises energy production from renewable natural resources and activities related to energy saving. The management of minerals is mostly a business activity connected with the use of recycled metals.
