Up-to-date information on Finland in pocket size

Statistics Finland's newly published Finland in Figures is a compact, 40-page information package in pocket size about Finland and its people. The booklet provides key data on the population, economy, living conditions, manufacturing and culture in the form of statistics and graphics. International comparison data are also included.

Finland in Figures is easy to read and its small size makes it handy to carry with you. Finland in Figures 2011 pocket statistics are available in three languages: Finnish, Swedish and English.

Extracts from statistical data on 2010 from Finland in Figures:

  • At year-end Finland's population was 5,375,276. Eleven per cent of the population lived in the capital of Helsinki.
  • There were 1,037 women per one thousand men in Finland. In the over eighty-year-old population there were 2,151 women per one thousand men.
  • Seventy-eight per cent of the population were Lutheran and one per cent Orthodox. Nineteen per cent of the population had no religious affiliation.
  • Ninety per cent of the resident population spoke Finnish, five per cent Swedish and one per cent Russian as their native language.
  • There were 167,954 foreign nationals resident in Finland. The largest number, or 29,080, of them were Estonian nationals. The next largest number of 28,426 were Russian nationals.
  • Seventy-five per cent of households had broadband connection, 68 per cent owned a digital camera, 18 per cent used the computer as television and 32 per cent had a GPS mobile phone.
  • Central government debt amounted to EUR 75 billion, or around EUR 14,000 per capita. Central government debt grew by EUR 11 billion from the previous year.
  • Official development assistance totalled EUR 1 billion, or 0.55 per cent of gross national income.
  • A total of 431,623 offences were recorded by the police, customs or the border guard. Thefts numbered 148,213 and assaults 33,082.
  • General government debt's share of GDP stayed below 60 per cent in 13 of the 27 EU Member States. In Greece, the debt was 142.8 per cent and in Italy 119.0 per cent of GDP. In Finland, the share of the debt amounted to 48.4 per cent.
