December 2009 Statistics Finland interprets the economic
depression as a level shift
Statistics Finland regards the economic depression as a level shift
which influences the picture of the economy obtained from
seasonally adjusted and trend time series. The aim is to draw a
more truthful picture of the economy and improve the quality of
seasonal adjustment. A level shift can be seen in the time series
of quarterly national accounts released on Tuesday, 8 December
2009.

December 2009 Children and adolescents in Finland in
statistics
One fifth of Finland's population are under 18 years of age.
Forty-three per cent of families with children have one child while
only five per cent of them have four or more children. The newly
published Statistical Yearbook of Finland draws a precise picture
of the Finnish society.

October 2009 Finland has the highest number of tertiary
level students in the Nordic countries
According to the recently published Nordic Statistical Yearbook,
relative to the size of population Finland has the highest number
of students in tertiary education in the Nordic countries. Nearly
one in five of the population aged 20 to 39 in Finland and around
one in eight in Denmark and Norway attend tertiary education.

Männistö awarded Eino H. Laurila national income medal
The Eino H. Laurila national income medal for 2009 has been awarded
to Pirkko Aulin-Ahmavaara and Hanna-Leena Männistö. The medal is
awarded as recognition of noteworthy work to advance economic
research.
14 October 2009 Findicator for information about
social development in Finland
Statistics Finland and the Prime Minister's Office have built a
new, free online service which contains around 100 indicators
describing social phenomena. The Findicator service provides access
to up-to-date statistics on economy, health, education, labour
market and the environment.

September 2009 Internet usage is changing
Ever growing numbers of people in Finland use the Internet for
online banking and for reading web versions of printed media.
Statistics Finland's new report Changes in Internet usage includes
surveyed results on, for instance, computer and Internet use in
Finland and in other EU countries

September 2009 Hilkka Vihavainen appointed Deputy
Director General, Statistics Production
Ms Hilkka Vihavainen has been appointed Deputy Director General of
Statistics Production at Statistics Finland for the five-year term
starting on 1 October 2009.

August 2009 Statistics Finland will host the European
Conference on Quality in Official Statistic
Statistics Finland and Eurostat will jointly organise the Q2010
European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics in Helsinki
from 4 to 6 May 2010. The Conference is now held in Finland for the
first time.

August 2009 Wins for Finland in the International
Statistical Literacy Competition
Finnish school students triumphed in the International Statistical
Literacy Competition for young people, which was held in connection
with the session of the International Statistical Institute in
Durban, South Africa, on 20 August. The wins for Finland came in
the 17 to 18 age category of individual students and in the team
competition.

August 2009 Teamwork has become increasingly difficult
in the 2000s
According to a Statistics Finland publication concerning working
conditions in Finland, as many as two in three wage and salary
earners work in teams. However, increasingly few employees are
satisfied with the operational preconditions of their team.

July 2009 Finland is the 3rd most expensive country in the
EU
Of the countries participating in the Price Comparison Programme of
the EU Commission, only Denmark, Norway, Switzerland and Ireland
are more expensive than Finland. Finland is the third most
expensive country in the EU and the second most expensive country
in the euro area. Statistics Finland is responsible for Finland's
data in this international price comparison coordinated by
Eurostat.

The Annual Report includes information about Statistics Finland's

Finnish people's time use
Statistics Finland is conducting an extensive survey of time use in
Finland to study topics like the length of people's working day,
and time spent on domestic work, studying or leisure hobbies.
Statistics Finland will interview 4,500 households for the
survey.

Revisions of data are typical in quarterly accounts
The data in all time series of quarterly accounts may become
revised either because of revisions in the source data or changes
in calculation methods. In addition to this, the figures of
seasonally adjusted and trend series become revised in each quarter
even if no changes have taken place in the source data or
calculation methods.

April 2009 National champions found in International
Statistical Literacy Competition
School students in Finland have been competing in their statistical
skills in the International Statistical Literacy Competition.
Thirteen schools and 165 students participated in the national
round of the competition.

February 2009 Gross domestic product in decline, Finland
is in recession
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the volume of
Finland's gross domestic product diminished by 1.3 per cent in the
last quarter of 2008 from the previous quarter. Output has now
declined for two successive quarters.

be released at 10 am on 27 February 2009
Statistics Finland will release preliminary national accounts data
on economic development in 2008 at a press conference starting at
10 am on 27 February 2009. At the same time, statistics will also
be released on general government deficit and gross debt, quarterly
national accounts, and taxes and tax-like payments.
