Growth of output quickened in May
The volume of total output was 7.9 per cent greater in May 2000 than in May 1999. In April, output grew by 2.1 per cent from the previous year. The Monthly Indicator of Total Output of Statistics Finland indicates that output went up in all main industries of the national economy.
Output in manufacturing grew briskly after the April strike in the wood and paper industry. Boosted by the electronics industry, output in manufacturing increased by 12.4 per cent. In construction, too, strong growth of output continued, reaching 14 per cent in May.
After the plunge in April, output in trade went up by 10.2 per cent in May. Output grew briskly in all the main sectors of trade in May.
Output in transport went up by 9.2 per cent. Boosted by commercial fellings, output in agriculture and forestry grew by 8.6 per cent. In other services and public services output increased by 2 per cent.
The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on thirteen monthly series on different sectors of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting.
