Growth of output accelerated in August
The volume of total output was 6.6 per cent greater in August 2000 than in August 1999. In July, output grew by 4.2 per cent from the previous year. The Monthly Indicator of Total Output of Statistics Finland indicates that output went up in all main industries of the national economy in August.
Increased production of electrical products continued to quicken the growth of manufacturing. The production of electrical products went up by almost 50 per cent from last year's August. Industrial output as calculated per working day increased by nearly 14 per cent in August. The good 10 per cent growth in the output of agriculture and forestry was boosted by good grain crop and increased commercial fellings. The total development of the economy was also sustained by output growth in transport, trade and construction.
Output in transport grew by slightly over 6 per cent and in trade by 6 per cent. The growth was strongest in whole sale trade. Output in construction increased by 4.5 per cent in the year to August. Output in other services and government services increased by 2 per cent.
The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on thirteen monthly series on different sectors of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting.
