Growth of total output continued in September

The volume of total output was 5.5 per cent greater in September than in September 1999. In August, output grew by 6.7 per cent from the previous year. The Monthly Indicator of Total Output of Statistics Finland indicates that, apart from trade, output went up in all main industries of the national economy in September.

As throughout the early part of the year, output in manufacturing continued to be boosted by the manufacture of electrical goods, where output increased by 48 per cent in the year to September. In September, like in August, industrial output calculated by per working day grew by just short of 14 per cent. The good 5 per cent growth in output in agriculture and forestry was mainly attributable to good grain crop, for commercial fellings contracted by 2 per cent from the year before.

In the year to September, output increased by 2.5 per cent in construction and by 2 per cent in transport. Output in trade remained at previous year's level. Sales in the retail trade went up by good 6 per cent, whereas sales in the motor trade and wholesale trade went down. In other services and public services output increased by 2 per cent.

The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on thirteen monthly series on different sectors of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting.
