Industrial output grew by 6.8 per cent from previous year in March

According to Statistics Finland, Finnish industrial output as calculated per working day went up by 6.8 per cent in the year to March.

Output in the metal industry increased by good 13 per cent in the year to March. Within the metal industry, output in the manufacture of electrical equipment grew by good 17 per cent. In the rest of the metal industry, output went up by just short of 6 per cent.

In the wood and paper industry output fell by good 6 per cent in March. In the chemical industry, output grew by close on 13 per cent and in other manufacturing by good 2 per cent. Output of energy increased by good 10 per cent in the year to March.

Capacity utilisation rate in manufacturing was just short of 88 per cent in March. In the pulp and paper industry, capacity utilisation rate was good 90 per cent, in the metal industry good 92 per cent and in the chemical industry just under 83 per cent. Capacity utilisation rate in other manufacturing was good 80 per cent.

These preliminary data are based on information available to Statistics Finland on 27 April. A revised growth percentage of industrial output as well as data by industry for March will be published on the Internet in the StatFin statistical service on 15 May 2001 at 7 a.m.
