Industrial output decreased further in June

According to Statistics Finland, industrial output as calculated per working day decreased by 3.0 per cent in the year to June. In the January to June 2001 period, industrial output increased by 2.5 per cent from the corresponding time period twelve months back. In the first quarter of 2001, industrial output still grew by good 7 per cent but in the second quarter fell by just under 2 per cent when compared to the corresponding time periods in 2000.

Output in the metal industry went down by good one per cent in June when compared to June 2000. Within the metal industry, the manufacture of electrical equipment fell by good 2 per cent and output in the rest of the metal industry contracted by 0.2 per cent.

Output in the wood and paper industry went down by close on 11 per cent in June from twelve months before. In the chemical industry, output fell by 8 per cent. In other manufacturing, output diminished by close on 3 per cent. In energy production, output increased by as much as 13 per cent compared to twelve months before.

Capacity utilisation rate in manufacturing was 82 per cent in June having been close on 5 percentage points higher than this in June 2000. In the pulp and paper industry, capacity utilisation rate was just short of 78 per cent, in the metal industry 88 per cent and in the chemical industry 75 per cent. Capacity utilisation rate in other manufacturing was good 78 per cent.

These preliminary data are based on information available to Statistics Finland by 30 July. A revised growth percentage of industrial output and data by industry for June will be published on the Internet in the StatFin statistical service on 15 August 2001 at 7 am.
