Close on 1.5 per cent drop in export prices

Export prices fell from June to July by 1.4 per cent due to the lower prices of papers, paperboards and base metals. By contrast, prices of chemical pulp took an upward turn of close on 12 per cent from June to July. Figures are revealed by the export price index of Statistics Finland.

Export prices have fallen 0.3 per cent since July 1995, the change in the export price index for the whole preceding year having last been negative in May 1994.

Producer prices in industry fell 0.6 per cent from June to July. As in export prices, the drop was due primarily to the lower prices charged for papers, paperboards and base metals.

Wholesale prices rose 0.4 per cent from June to July, due to the rise in prices of agricultural products, oil products and crude oil. The rise on July 1995 was 0.5 per cent.

The HWWA index, which measures the dollar prices of raw materials on the world market, rose 1.9 per cent from June to July, the rise in the year to July being 6 per cent.
