Metal industry accelerates growth in industrial output

According to the index per working day of Statistics Finland, industrial output grew by 3.4 per cent in the year to November. The metal industry accelerated the growth rate slightly as there was a substantial increase in the manufacture of machinery and equipment as well as in electrical equipment and metal products. In the paper industry, instead, the stoppages continued and there was a further decline in output in the wood and paper industry. There was also further decline in other industries, mainly in the output on the domestic markets.

Output in the metal industry increased by a good 16 per cent in the year to November. The manufacture of electrical equipment grew by about one fifth, and that of metal products by almost 16 per cent.

Output in the wood and paper industry fell in November by 8 per cent compared to the year before. The manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products declined by over 8 per cent and output in the mechanical wood industry was likewise almost 8 per cent.

The capacity utilisation rate of manufacturing was over 84 per cent in November, which is about 4 percentage points lower than in November of 1994. In the metal industry the utilisation rate was close on 92 per cent while in the paper industry only just over 85 per cent, i.e almost 9 percentage points lower than the year before.

Industrial output increased by 8 per cent between January and November

Industrial output grew by almost 8 per cent between January and November 1995 compared to the corresponding period in 1994. There was an increase of one fifth in the metal industry, whereas in the wood and paper industry output only grew by just over 2 per cent. The increase in output in the rest of industry was likewise about 2 per cent.
