Intensified or special support was received by 23 per cent of comprehensive school pupils in 2021

According to Statistics Finland's data, an increasing number of comprehensive school pupils received support for learning in 2021. Intensified support was received by 75,800, or 13.5 per cent of comprehensive school pupils and special support by 53,100, or 9.4 per cent of comprehensive school pupils. The share of pupils having received intensified and special support grew by 1.7 percentage points from the year before.

Key selections

  • Among the recipients of intensified support, 62 per cent were boys and 36 per cent girls. Seventy per cent of the recipients of special support were boys and 30 per cent girls. Fifty-one per cent of comprehensive school pupils were boys and 49 per cent girls in 2021.
  • Over one-third of the pupils receiving special support had 80 to 100 per cent of their teaching in a general education group.
  • The most common forms of support were part-time special education and remedial teaching. More than one-half of the children receiving special support had special needs assistance in 2021.
  • A bigger share of pupils than before received support for learning in all Mainland Finland regions.
  • In 2021, a total of 36,900 students in vocational education leading to a qualification received special support, which is 11 per cent of the total number of students in vocational education.
