Number of jobs returned in 2021 to the levels prior to the corona pandemic

According to Statistics Finland, there were 2,377,100 jobs in Finland at the end of 2021, which was 92,500 more than in 2020 and almost the same as in 2019. Thus, the number of jobs returned immediately after the first coronavirus year to the figures prior to it. Examined by industry, the number of jobs grew most in manufacturing and in administrative and support service activities in 2021.

Change

Starting from 16 February 2023, Statistics Finland will start releasing data on workplace self-sufficiency by area. In addition, data will be published at the 2-digit level of the Standard Industrial Classification (TOL 2008) by sex and area.

Key selections

  • In 2021, the number of jobs returned to the level of 2019.
  • Examined by industry, the number of jobs increased most in manufacturing and in administrative and support service activities.
  • In 2021, there were fewer jobs in transportation and storage and in accommodation and food service activities than before the corona pandemic.
  • In the biggest municipalities, the number of jobs grew in relative terms most in Tampere and decreased most in Vantaa in 2021 compared to 2019.
  • Workplace self-sufficiency, or the jobs in the area divided by employed persons living in the area, was in Mainland Finland highest in Harjavalta, Vieremä, Pietarsaari and Helsinki in 2021.
