Waste statistics 2022

Volume of waste generated in 2022 decreased considerably from the year before – due to a decrease in the amount of waste from mining and quarrying and industries processing waste

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 111 million tonnes of waste was generated in 2022. This is 11.2 per cent less than one year earlier. The volume of waste generated decreased mainly as a result of a decline in waste from mining and quarrying and secondary production. The amount of waste from construction decreased by around 18 per cent.

Correction

Database tables and the release for 2022 of the statistics on waste statistics were corrected. The amount of mineral waste decreased by 2.3 million tons.

  • The combined amount of waste generated by manufacturing industries fell by around 17.2 per cent.
  • The amount of waste from construction fell strongly by around 18.2 per cent.
  • Due to the large amount of mineral waste, the share of disposal in all waste treatment was around 81 per cent.
