Amount of municipal waste decreased in 2023

The amount of municipal waste decreased considerably for the second year in a row. According to Statistics Finland, around 2.6 million tonnes of municipal waste were generated in 2023.

  • The total amount of municipal waste fell to around 2.6 million tonnes in 2023.
  • Of all municipal waste, more than before was recovered by recycling or through preparation for reuse, around 44.6 per cent.
  • The share of energy recovery of municipal waste fell to 54 per cent.
