Fewer employed persons and more unemployed persons in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to one year ago
According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, the number of employed persons in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 34,000 lower than in the corresponding quarter of 2023. There were 34,000 more unemployed persons.

Number of hours worked grew slightly
In the fourth quarter of 2024, the average number of employed persons was 2,572,000 (margin of error ±17,000), which was 34,000 fewer than in the corresponding quarter of 2023.
The number of hours worked by employed persons was 1034.7 million hours in the fourth quarter of 2024, which was 1.2 per cent more than a year ago.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of employed persons increased most in accommodation and food service activities (I) and decreased most in professional, scientific and technical activities (M) compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Share of persons working part-time decreased
In the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of part-time employed persons was 482,000, which was 18.8 per cent of all employed persons. The share was 1.0 percentage points lower than one year ago.
Altogether 118,000 or 24.4 per cent of part-time employed persons worked part-time because full-time work was not available. The number of persons belonging to this group was almost the same as in the corresponding period one year before.
More unemployed persons than one year ago
The average number of unemployed persons in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 227,000 (margin of error ±12,000), which was 34,000 more than in the October to December period of 2023. The unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 8.1 per cent, having been 6.9 per cent one year earlier.
In October to December 2024, the number of persons in the inactive population was 1,363,000, which was 20,000 more than a year earlier.
