According to Statistics Finland, 35.7 per cent of all persons aged 16 or over used public transport in 2024. Those aged 16 to 34 used public transport most, 58.2 per cent, and those aged over 74 used it least, 16.6 per cent. In other age groups, one-third or fewer were public transport users.

Key selections

  • In 2024, altogether 7.2 per cent of all persons aged 16 or over belonging to the household population had used public transport daily, 15.0 per cent weekly and 13.6 per cent less often but at least once a month.
  • According to the statistical grouping of municipalities, 45.7 per cent used public transport in urban municipalities, 12.3 per cent in semi-urban municipalities and 5.5 per cent in rural municipalities.
  • The main individual reason for not using public transport in urban municipalities was most often unsuitable schedules. In semi-urban and rural municipalities, the reason was that the service was not available near the place of residence.
  • In 2024, altogether 10.4 per cent of persons aged 16 or over belonging to the household population self-reported that they had not received a medical service (excluding dentist) they needed and 11.4 per cent had not received a dental service they needed.
  • The availability of services is measured 6-yearly as part of the EU-SILC statistics, where Finland's data are based on the statistics on living conditions.
