Waste statistics 2023

Volume of waste generated in 2023 returned to the level of 2021 – due to an increase in the amount of waste from mining and quarrying and construction

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 122 million tonnes of waste was generated in 2023. This is 8.2 per cent more than one year earlier, but 1.9 per cent less than in 2021. The volume of waste generated grew mainly as a result of an increase in waste from mining and quarrying and construction. The amount of waste from services and households decreased by around 4.5 per cent from the amount in 2022.

  • The combined amount of waste generated by manufacturing industries decreased by 2.8 per cent.
  • The amount of waste from energy production grew strongly, by 83 per cent.
  • The amount of mineral waste generated in construction increased by 16 per cent.
  • Due to the large amount of mineral waste, the share of disposal in all waste treatment was around 85 per cent.
