Students in education leading to a qualification or degree numbered 1.4 million in 2025

According to Statistics Finland, the total number of pupils and students in education leading to a qualification or degree was 1,394,000 in 2025. The number of pupils in pre-primary education decreased by four per cent, that of pupils in comprehensive education by two per cent and the number of students in vocational education and training by eight per cent from the previous year. The number of students grew by two per cent in general upper secondary education, by four per cent in university of applied sciences education and by two per cent in university education.

Key selections

  • In 2025, there were 304,300 new students and altogether 1,393,700 students in education leading to a qualification or degree. A total of 244,800 qualifications or degrees were completed.
  • Women made up 54 per cent of new students, 52 per cent of all students and 55 per cent of completers of qualifications or degrees.
  • Men studied most in the fields of technology (76%) and information and communication technology (ICT) (74%), women in health and welfare and education (in both 82%).
  • Foreign-language speaking students numbered 216,300 and they spoke 146 different native languages. Students had a total of 177 different nationalities.
  • In 2025, a total of 18,300 students participated in preparatory education for an upper secondary qualification and 6,400 pupils in preparatory education for comprehensive education.
