Building stock and new production: Changes in the publication of statistics
Date of change:Release: Building stock and new production 2025, 12.3.2026
Information about the change
The building stock data will be published for the first time as part of the Building stock and new production statistics on 12 March 2026, when the building stock data for 2025 will be released.
Free-time residences are no longer recorded as a separate database table. Their data are instead included in the rest of the building stock under classification of buildings class 02: free‑time residential buildings.
Starting from the statistical year 2025, the main data source for the statistics was transferred from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency to the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). At the same time, Statistics Finland renewed the statistics production process.
These changes may partly explain differences observed between years in the statistics.
The building stock data describe the active building stock, meaning that demolished and destroyed buildings are removed from the stock. Buildings that have remained unused for a long time are also excluded. However, they are returned to the building stock if they become residential again and someone moves in.
