Description

Data from population censuses are used in the describing and planning of the structure of society and its changes. Population censuses are drawn in almost all countries of the world. To ensure the comparability of census data the UN and the EU issue recommendations on their contents and data definitions as well as on the classifications to be used in them.

Data content

The Finnish Population Census 2000 is a complete set of statistics containing basic data describing the structure, employment, families and housing of the population on 31 December 2000. In the 2000 population census data were produced on:

  • Population and its employment, occupations and income
  • Structure, income and employment of household-dwelling units and families
  • Dwellings and housing conditions of household-dwelling units
  • Buildings and free-time residences.

The Population Census Handbook contains descriptions of the data contents, concepts and classifications of the 2000 Population Census.

Classifications used

The data in the population census tables are classified by the same classifications as are used for the pertinent topics. Data on occupations and socio-economic groups are only produced in connection with population censuses. The currently used classification of occupations is ISCO1997 and the classification of socio-economic groups based on it. Population censuses cover the entire population of the country, so statistics from census data can be produced by quite precise regional divisions, e.g. by municipality and urban sub-area, and by detailed classifications.

Data collection methods and data sources

The data for the Population Census are gathered from approximately 30 different registers and administrative files. The Population Census Project was only responsible for the collection of data on occupations. Most of the occupational data were also obtained from registers and only twenty or so per cent were collected with a direct survey of enterprises.

Data collections

Updating frequency

The full set of Population Census data has been produced in 1950, 1960, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985,1995 and 2000. Most of the data on the topics included in the set of census data are also produced annually.

Time of completion or release

The first of the 2000 set of census data were completed in April 2001 and the last in December 2002.

Time series

Census data have been produced annually on population since 1971, on dwellings and buildings since 1985, on employment since 1987 and on families since 1977.

A longitudinal data file spanning from 1970 to 2000 and containing information on all persons resident in Finland in 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000 has been produced from the census data on individual persons. The file also contains data by families and household-dwelling units. In addition, data on a sample of 400,000 persons from the 1950 Population Census have been attached to the file.
