Retail trade sales went down by 0.4 per cent in March from one year ago
According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales went down by 0.4 per cent in March from March 2012. The volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, contracted by 1.7 per cent over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 3.2 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year, while sales in department store trade went down by 2.3 per cent. Wholesale trade sales went down by 4.0 per cent and motor vehicle trade sales by 47.3 per cent from twelve months back. The fall in motor vehicle trade sales was due to the strong growth during the reference period, which anticipated the amendment in the motor vehicle tax legislation. In total trade, sales contracted by 11.7 per cent in March.

In the first quarter of 2013, retail trade sales grew by 0.6 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. In contrast, wholesale trade sales went down by 2.7 per cent and motor vehicle trade sales by 35.8 per cent from twelve months back. In total trade, sales were down by 7.4 per cent in January to March on the respective period of the year before. In total trade, sales have last fallen as strongly in the last quarter of 2009, when sales contracted by 8.4 per cent from the corresponding period of the year before.
