Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased by nearly 14 per cent in May
In May 2012, building permits were granted for a total of around 3.7 million cubic metres, which is 13.9 per cent less than one year earlier. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

The cubic volume covered by permits granted for residential buildings fell by 17.1 per cent in May from one year back. The cubic volume covered by permits for detached houses decreased by 19.6 per cent, that for residential blocks of flats by 14.1 per cent and that for terraced houses by 12.8 per cent.
The cubic volume covered by permits for other than residential building construction fell by 12.1 per cent from May 2011.
The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings fell by 39.6 per cent.
The cubic volume covered by permits granted for industrial and warehouse buildings increased by 6 per cent from May 2011. At the same time the cubic volume covered by permits for public service buildings went up by 8.3 per cent.
In May 2012, building permits were granted for 2,981 dwellings, which is 19.4 per cent fewer than one year earlier.
Volume of newbuilding decreased by nearly 5 per cent in May
In May 2012, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production decreased by 4.5 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction contracted by 4 per cent from May 2011.
The volume of residential building construction has been falling since autumn 2011. The volume of detached house construction has been contracting since as far back as spring of last year. This May, the volume of detached house construction diminished by 7.3 per cent and the volume of construction of residential blocks of flats by 0.1 per cent from last year. At the same time the volume of terraced house construction showed a slight increase of 0.3 per cent.
The volume of construction of industrial and warehouse buildings diminished most in May, or by 17.3 per cent. The volume of construction of commercial and office buildings fell by 4.3 per cent and that of public service buildings by 1.6 per cent from May 2011.
The volume of other than residential building construction went down by 5.1 per cent from one year ago.
