Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased further year-on-year
According to Statistics Finland, in March to May 2019, building permits were granted for a total of 10.2 million cubic metres, which was 28.3 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year ago. The cubic volume went down clearly for all building types from the corresponding period one year ago. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings declined most again, by 34 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings went down by 26.3 per cent from one year back.

Cubic volume granted for residential buildings again lower than one year earlier
During March to May, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.7 million, while one year earlier, the figure was 3.7 million cubic metres. The cubic volume for all residential building types decreased year-on-year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential blocks of flats decreased by 29.1 per cent, that for terraced houses by 22.8 per cent and that for detached houses by 23.2 per cent.
In March to May 2019, building permits were granted in total for 8,929 dwellings, one year earlier the corresponding figure was 12,449 dwellings. The number of building permits granted for residential buildings fell by 28.3 per cent from the previous year.
Volume of building production is growing slightly
In March to May 2019, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 2.9 per cent year-on-year. The volume of construction of residential buildings declined in the period by 2.6 per cent and that of other than residential building construction, in turn, increased by 7.7 per cent. Measured by volume, 14.9 per cent more building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 1.1 per cent lower than one year ago.
