Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased

According to Statistics Finland, in November to January, building permits were granted for a total of 7.3 million cubic metres, which was 22.0 per cent less than one year ago. The cubic volume of residential building went down by 28.5 per cent and other than residential building 18.9 per cent.

In connection with the publication of data for January 2020, the statistics on building and dwelling production have adopted the renewed Classification of Buildings 2018, the model buildings defined according to the new classification and their new prices by area.

Cubic volume granted for residential building construction decreased

During November to January, building permits were granted for a total 2.1 million cubic metres, while the corresponding figure was 3.0 million cubic metres one year earlier. In residential building the cubic volume of blocks of flats diminished by 29.9 per cent and that of detached houses by 21.3 per cent from one year ago.

During November to January, building permits were granted in total for 7,515 dwellings, the number decreased by 24.7 per cent from the previous year.

Volume of building production decreased further

In November to January, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production decreased by 3.8 per cent year-on-year. Measured by volume, 16.8 per cent more building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 30.6 per cent higher than one year ago.

The calculation method of the volume index of newbuilding has been revised and the base year 2015 was introduced in the index.
