Finns consumed with enthusiasm for travelling in August 2010

In August, Finnish residents were considerably more eager to travel than in the previous year. Finnish residents made 45 per cent more leisure trips with paid accommodation in Finland than in the previous year's August. Trips abroad also increased by 25 per cent. The neighbouring countries were still popular destinations for Finns. Sweden and Estonia are long-standing favourites, but in August plenty of trips were made to Norway and Russia as well. Over one half of all leisure trips including overnight stays in the country of destination were made to these four neighbouring countries.

In August Finnish residents made 529,000 overnight leisure trips abroad. In all, 428,000 of them included one or more overnights in the country of destination, twenty-four per cent in Estonia and twenty per cent in Sweden. Most of the cruises including overnights on board only were to Sweden and Estonia.

Finnish residents made 4.4 million leisure trips in Finland. This is 76 per cent up on the corresponding period in the year before. Most of the trips, or 3.5 million, included free accommodation at one’s own free-time residence, with relatives or friends or in some other type of free accommodation.

These preliminary data are based on Statistics Finland’s Finnish Travel Survey for which 1,406 persons aged 15 to 74 permanently resident in Finland were interviewed in September.

The final annual data on the Finnish Travel Survey are published on the homepage of the statistics in July following the statistical reference year. In addition, quarterly preliminary data are published in connection with the monthly publication Tourism Statistics (accommodation statistics) in six weeks from the end of the relevant quarter.
