Producer Price Indices in October 2008

Producer prices for manufactured products rose by 3.8 per cent, export prices by 0.1 per cent and import prices by 1.4 per cent from October 2007 to October 2008. The basic price index for domestic supply went up by 4.4 per cent in the year. The year-on-year change in the wholesale price index was 3.7 per cent.

The rise in the producer prices for manufactured products was particularly caused by increased prices of electricity from October 2007. The rise was curbed by fallen prices of non-ferrous metals.

From September to October, producer prices for manufactured products fell by 0.8 per cent. The fall in the prices was especially due to reductions in the prices of oil products. The fall in the prices was held back by, among other things, risen prices of paper and electricity.
