Unemployment rate 7.1 per cent in November

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed people was 38,000 lower than in November 2009. The unemployment rate fell by 1.4 percentage points from one year earlier to 7.1 per cent. The number of employed persons grew by 20,000. The number of women not in the labour force increased by 31,000 compared with last year’s November.

In November 2010, the number of employed persons was 2,430,000, which was 20,000 higher than a year earlier. This change fits within the margin of error for the number of employed persons (± 30,000). The number of wage and salary earners increased but that of self-employed persons fell clearly. The number of wage and salary earners in continuing full-time employment decreased from 76.2 per cent to 74.3 per cent. The number of wage and salary earnings working in fixed-term employment relationships grew by 46,000 and that of part-time workers by 16,000 from one year ago.

In November, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 67.3 per cent, which was 0.4 percentage points higher than one year before. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.1 per cent. Men’s employment rate was 67.8 per cent and women’s 66.8 per cent.

According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 186,000 unemployed in November 2010, i.e. 38,000 fewer than in November of the year before. The number of unemployed men was 111,000 and that of women 76,000, or around 60 per cent of the unemployed were men and around 40 per cent women.

At 7.1 per cent, the unemployment rate was 1.4 percentage points lower in November than one year earlier. The trend of the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 per cent. The unemployment rate of women was 6.0 per cent and that of men 8.2 per cent. In November, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 16.1 per cent, which was five percentage points lower than in the previous year’s November. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people fell to 19.8 per cent. The unemployment rate was lowest in the areas of the Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI) of Southern Finland, where it stood at 6.4 per cent, and highest, at 10.6 per cent, in the area of Lapland AVI.

The number of 15 to 74-year-old women not in the labour force grew by 31,000. The number of men not in the labour force remained almost unchanged.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of November 2010, there were altogether 245,000 persons registered, in accordance with the Unemployment Security Act and the Employment Office Regulations, as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 29,000 lower than in November 2009.

Unemployment decreased from the previous year in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres (ELY). The number of unemployed job-seekers decreased most in South Ostrobothnia (–24%), Ostrobothnia (–19%) and North Savo (–15%). At the end of November, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 17,000, which was 16,000 lower than twelve months earlier.

The number of persons covered by labour market policy measures totalled 96,000 the end of November, which was 10,000 more than in November of the year before. Altogether 3.7 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy measures.

There were 27,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 6,000 lower than in last year’s November. During this November, 34,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 7,000 more than in November 2009.
