Unemployment rate 10.7 per cent in May
According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in May 2014 was 296,000, which was slightly lower than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 10.7 per cent, having been 10.8 per cent in May of the year before. There were 14,000 fewer employed persons than in May of the previous year. The number of persons in the inactive population was 27,000 higher in May 2014 than one year earlier.
Unemployment rate and trend of unemployment rate 2004/05 – 2014/05
In May 2014, the number of employed persons was 2,460,000 (margin of error ±32,000), which was 14,000 lower than a year earlier. There were 15,000 fewer employed men and nearly as many employed women as in May 2013. The number of employed persons decreased in the private sector and grew in the public sector compared with May 2013.
In May, the employment rate, that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, was 68.9 per cent, or the same as one year earlier. Men’s employment rate was 69.2 per cent and women’s 68.5 per cent. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.4 per cent.
According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, there were 296,000 unemployed (margin of error ±20,000) in May 2014, which was slightly less than one year earlier. The number of unemployed men was 168,000 and that of women 128,000.
The unemployment rate in May 2014 was 10.7 per cent and one year earlier it was 10.8 per cent. Men’s unemployment rate was 11.8 per cent and women’s 9.6 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.6 per cent.
In May, there were a total of 652,000 young people aged 15 to 24 . Of them, 285,000 were employed and 128,000 unemployed. Thus, the labour force of young people (employed and unemployed) totalled 413,000. The share of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 among the population in the same age group was 19.6 per cent. In May, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24, that is, the proportion of the unemployed among the labour force, stood at 30.9 per cent, which was 4.3 percentage points lower than one year previously. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.6 per cent.
There were 1,337,000 persons in the inactive population in May 2014, which was 27,000 more than in May 2013. Of the inactive population, 122,000 persons were in disguised unemployment .

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy
At the end of May 2014, there were altogether 302,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices. The number of unemployed job seekers was 33,000 higher than in May 2013.
Unemployment increased from the previous year's May in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres; most in Uusimaa (19%), Kainuu (16%) and Central Finland (15%). At the end of May, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 21,000, which was 6,000 more than twelve months earlier.
The number of persons engaged in services included in the activation stage totalled 127,000 at the end of May, which was 18,000 more than in May of the year before. Altogether, 4.6 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy services.
There were 38,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 5,000 higher than in last year's May. During May, 36,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 5,000 fewer than in May 2013.
