Finland's preliminary population figure 5,419,977 at the end of September
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of September was 5,419,977. Over the January to September period, Finland's population increased by 18,710 persons, which is 1,850 lower than in the respective period of one year previously. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 11,870 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 6,840 persons.
Population increase by month 2010–2012*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to September period, 22,520 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 10,650 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 130 lower and the number of emigrants 820 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 6,200 of the immigrants and 7,490 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to September period, 45,420 children were born, which is 270 children lower than in the corresponding period of 2011. The number of deaths was 38,580, which is 640 higher than one year earlier.
The number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 218,060 by the end of September. Compared with the previous January to September period, the decrease was 1,380 migrations according to the municipal division of 2012.
According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in absolute numbers most in the regions of Uusimaa (12,880), Pirkanmaa (3,140) and North Ostrobothnia (1,890). Relative to the population, population increase was highest in the same regions: Uusimaa, 8.3 per mil, Pirkanmaa, 6.4 per mil and North Ostrobothnia, 4.7 per mil. Population loss was in absolute numbers largest in the region of Etelä-Savo (-660 persons) and in relative terms in the region of Kainuu (6.6 per mil).
The growth in the size of the population accelerated most in South Carelia: population loss was now 240 persons lower than in the January to September period of 2011. Relative to the population, the population developed most positively in the region of Kainuu. However, there population loss was 6.6 per mil, but in the corresponding period of last year population loss was even higher, 8.4 per mil.
According to preliminary data, population growth slowed down most in Ostrobothnia. There the population grew by 420 persons from January to September, that is, population increase remained 620 persons lower than in the previous year. Relative to the population, population growth slowed down most in Åland, where population increase was 3.8 per mil, having been 8.9 per mil one year previously.
During the January to September period, migrations between regions numbered 100,850, which is 710 lower than one year before according to the municipal division of 2012. Migration gain from inter-regional migration was highest in absolute numbers in Uusimaa (2,360 persons) and Pirkanmaa (1,370 persons), which was also highest in relative terms (2.8 per mil). Migration loss was largest in absolute numbers in Lapland (-700 persons) and in relative terms in the region of Kainuu (-5.3 per mil).
