Finland's preliminary population figure 5,430,796 at the end of March
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of March was 5,430,796. Over the January to March period, Finland's population increased by 4,120 persons, which is 370 higher than in the respective period of one year previously. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 3,520 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 610 persons.
Population increase by month 2010–2013*
According to the preliminary statistics for January to March period, 6,500 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 2,990 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 250 higher and the number of emigrants 70 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,550 of the immigrants and 2,110 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to March period, 14,300 children were born, which is 500 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths decreased by 550 from the year before and amounted to 13,690.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 52,490 by the end of March. Compared with the previous January to March period, the decrease was 1,100 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in absolute numbers most in the regions of Uusimaa, North Ostrobothnia and Pirkanmaa in the first quarter of the year. The population increase in Uusimaa was 3,850 persons, in North Ostrobothnia 680 persons and in Pirkanmaa 560 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in the same regions: in Uusimaa 2.5 per mil, in North Ostrobothnia 1.7 per mil and in Pirkanmaa 1.1 per mil. Population loss was in absolute terms highest in Pohjois-Savo, where the population decreased by 290 persons. Relative to the population, population loss was greatest in Kainuu, 1.6 per mil.
The growth in the size of the population accelerated most in the region of Uusimaa: population increase was now 360 persons higher than in the January to March period of 2012. The relative development of population speeded up most in the region of Kainuu. Although population loss there was 1.6 per mil, population loss was even higher, 2.2 per mil, in the corresponding period of last year.
According to preliminary data, development of population slowed down most in Pohjois-Savo. There population loss was 170 persons higher than last year. Relative to the population, development of population slowed down most in Åland, where population increase was 0.5 per mil in the January to March period, having been 1.2 per mil one year previously.
During January to March, migrations between regions numbered 21,770. Migration gain from migration between regions was highest in absolute numbers in Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa. The migration gain in Uusimaa was 910 persons and 280 persons in Pirkanmaa. In these regions it was also highest relative to the population, 0.6 per mil. In absolute numbers, the highest loss from migrations between regions was seen in Central Finland, where the migration loss was 200 persons, and in relative terms in Kainuu, where the migration loss was 1.2 per mil.
