Finland’s preliminary population figure 5,468,609 at the end of September

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of September was 5,468,609. Over the January to September period, Finland's population increased by 17,340 persons, which is 2,250 less than in the respective period of one year previously. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 12,330 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 5,010 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for January to September period, 23,500 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 11,170 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,100 lower and the number of emigrants 300 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 6,340 of the immigrants and 7,670 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to September period, 43,820 children were born, which is 570 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths increased by 280 from the year before and amounted to 38,820.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 208,590 by the end of September. Compared with the previous January to September period, the decrease was 1,630 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.

According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in the following regions in January to September of this year: Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Ostrobothnia, Åland, Pohjois-Savo, Central Ostrobothnia, Central Finland and Kanta-Häme.

In the January to September period, the population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it went up by 14 660 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 2 380 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Uusimaa, 9.2 per mil. Relative population growth was second largest in Åland, 7.2 per mil, and third largest in Pirkanmaa, 4,7 per mil. Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Lapland that lost 770 persons of its population. The population of Etelä-Savo decreased by 670 persons, which was the second biggest population loss. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Kainuu, 7.2 per mil and the second largest in Etelä-Savo, 4.4 per mil.

Most migration gain from total net migration (consisting of intramunicipal and international migration) was collected by Uusimaa, 9,560 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1,830 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms was attained by Uusimaa, 6,0 per mil, and Åland, 5,9 per mil.

In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the regions of Lapland, 610 persons, and of Kainuu, 410 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was found in the region of Kainuu, 5.1 per mil of the population.

During January to September, migration between regions numbered 101,000. The highest gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Pohjois-Savo, Varsinais-Suomi and Åland. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 3,860 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1,230 persons. Also the relative migration gain was highest in Uusimaa and in Pirkanmaa, both gaining 2.4 per mil of the population.

Migration loss from migration between regions was largest in absolute numbers in Lapland, 840 persons and in relative terms in Kainuu, 6.9 per mil of the population.
