Finland's preliminary population figure 5,484,308 at the end of September
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,484,308 at the end of September. During January to September Finland’s population grew by 12,560 persons. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 9,440 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population increase, or excess of births to deaths, was only 3,120 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2015*
According to the preliminary statistics for January to September, altogether 20,770 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 11,330 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 3,800 lower and the number of emigrants 430 lower than in the previous year. In all, 5,810 of the immigrants and 7,880 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During January to september, a total of 41,940 children were born, which was 1,910 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2014. The number of deaths was 38,820, which is 220 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 214,720 by the end of September. Compared with the previous January to September period, the increase was 3,770 migrations according to the municipal division of 2015. The number of migration inside region increased 1,200 and the number of migration between regions 2,570 from one year earlier.
According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in the following regions in January to September of this year: Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Ostrobothnia, Central Finland and Central Ostrobothnia.
In January to September, the population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it grew by 13,270 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 2 380 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Uusimaa, 8.2 per mil and in Pirkanmaa, 4.7 per mil. Relative population growth was third largest in Varsinais-Suomi, 3.0 per mil. Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Kymenlaakso that lost 930 persons of its population. The population of Lapland decreased by 890 persons, which was the second most. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Kainuu, 8.0 per mil and the second biggest in Etelä-Savo, 5.6 per mil.
Most migration gain from intramunicipal and international migration was collected by Uusimaa, 8,650 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1 920 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms was attained by Uusimaa, 5.4 per mil and by Pirkanmaa, 3.8 per mil.
In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the region of Lapland, 630 persons. In the region of South Ostrobothnia the loss was 560 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was also found in the region of Kainuu, 3.7 per mil of the population.
During January to September, migration between regions numbered 104,690. The highest gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi, Central Finland and Pohjois-Savo. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 4,540 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1 210 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Uusimaa, 2.8 per mil and in Pirkanmaa, 2.4 per mil.
Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in the region of Lapland, 970 persons. In relative terms migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in the region of Kainuu, 5.4 per mil of the population.
