Finland's preliminary population figure 5,516,812 at the end of January
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,516,812 at the end of January. Our country's population increased by 588 persons during January. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 1,220. The number of births was 632 lower than that of deaths.
Population increase by month 2014–2018*
During January, 4,047 children were born, which is 99 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2017. The number of deaths was 4,679, which is 850 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary statistics for January, 2,569 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,349 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 53 lower and the number of emigrants 26 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 57 of the immigrants and 935 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 21,647 during January. Compared with the corresponding period in 2017, the decrease was 28 migrations according to the municipal division of 2018.
