29 December 2011  Prohibition Act repealed by referendum 80 years ago
A consultative referendum was held about the Prohibition Act on 29-30 December 1931. Over 70 per cent of those who voted favoured repealing of the Act.

15 December 2011  Changes to publication sales and prices
As of 1 January 2012, the sales of Statistics Finland's printed publications transfers to Edita Publishing Oy. Some publication prices will be affected by the altered VAT rates that take effect at the turn of the year.

30 August 2011  The number of families with children lowest in decades
At the end of 2010, the number of families with children totalled 582,000. This represents the lowest figure ever recorded in the statistics. Today, 41 per cent of the Finnish population belong to a family with children.

30 August 2011  Finland again victorious in the International Statistical Literacy Competition
The team from Lyseonpuisto Upper Secondary School, Rovaniemi has won the upper secondary school category in the International Statistical Literacy Competition. The team from Peltola School, Vantaa received a commendation in the secondary school category.

29 August 2011  Data collection for the international survey of adult competencies (PIAAC) will be started
Finland will take part in the OECD's international survey of adult competencies. The survey will assess the various basic skills needed by the adult population in different walks of life, as well as their application to work and everyday living. Twenty-five countries will take part in the survey.

24 August 2011  Monthly data on prices of dwellings
Starting from 26 August 2011, data are also released monthly on the statistics on prices of dwellings. The data are published one month from the end of the statistical reference month.

24 August 2011  OECD provides well-being indicators for citizens
In June OECD published a set of indicators, the so-called "Better Life Index" on its website. "The aim is to focus on issues that are important for the citizens in various countries," says Martine Durand, OECD Chief Statistician and Director of Statistics, in an interview for Statistics Finland's Tieto&trendit magazine.

3 August 2011  Foreign citizens make up 6.5 per cent of the EU population
In all, 6.5 per cent of people living in EU Member States are foreigners, that is, citizens of some other country than their country of residence. People born in other countries than their country of residence make up 9.4 per cent of EU citizens.

11 July 2011  Foreign-language speakers are still rare in many municipalities
In 1980, there were some 9,000 foreign-language speakers in Finland. Over three decades, their number has increased nearly 25-fold, but even today, the share of foreign-language speakers is less than one per cent of the population in one municipality out of three.

Statistics Finland's booklet Finland in Figures is a compact, pocket-size information package about Finland and its people. It is available in Finnish, Swedish and English.

7 June 2011  Director General of Statistics Finland conferred Honorary Doctor
Ms Heli Jeskanen-Sundström, Director General of Statistics Finland, was conferred Honorary Doctor at the University of Helsinki Faculty of Social Sciences. Ms Jeskanen-Sundström has held the post of Director General of Statistics Finland since 2001. During her career, she has worked prominently in various co-operative organs in the field of statistics, for example, in governing positions of statistical committees in the EU, OECD and UN.

3 June 2011  A census of the world population is taken every ten years
In China, six million enumerators are needed for the Population Census 2010. Population censuses in Finland are conducted directly based on administrative registers without troubling the citizens, but in most parts of the world, censuses still rely on the conventional method of interviews.

The Annual Report includes information about Statistics Finland's central statistics, surveys and services.

29 April 2011  Background information on the Parliamentary election candidates and elected MPs released
In connection with the confirmed result of the Parliamentary elections, Statistics Finland has published an analysis on the backgrounds of the Parliamentary election candidates and elected MPs. The candidates and elected MPs are compared with persons entitled to vote by means of various background variables.

28 March 2011  Thematic pages on Population census opened
The year 2010 was an international census year. Statistics Finland has opened thematic pages related to population census on which articles and data on population census statistics are published. The first article describes the population censuses conducted in Finland over a period of more than 250 years.

1 March 2011  Gross domestic product grew up by 3.1 per cent in 2010
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the volume of Finland's GDP grew by 3.1 per cent last year. Gross domestic product, or the totalled up value added of the goods and services produced, amounted to EUR 180 billion last year.

18 February 2011  Consumer Price Index revised
Statistics Finland has made revisions to the Consumer Price Index. The base year of the revised Index is 2010. At the same time the weight structure of the Index and the commodity basket of the price monitoring have been updated

24 February 2011  National accounts data will be released at 10 am on 1 March 2011
Statistics Finland will release preliminary national accounts data on economic development in 2010 at a press conference starting at 10 am on 1 March 2011. At the same time, statistics will also be released on general government deficit and debt, quarterly national accounts, and taxes and tax-like payments.

Statistics Finland will release the Consumer Price Index data for January at a press conference starting at 10 am on 18 February 2011. The press conference will present how the Consumer Price Index has been renewed and which new commodities are included in its price monitoring.

24 January 2011  Students can still register for the International Statistical Literacy Competition
Finnish schools are challenged to take part in the International Statistical Literacy Competition, which aims to improve the abilities of young people in describing their environment with the help of statistics. It is possible to register into the competition until 18 March 2011.
