Finland in Figures 2005 pocket compendium of statistics published

Statistics Finland's pocket compendium of statistics, Finland in Figures 2005, has been published. This 40-page information pack on Finland and the Finns contains statistics and graphics describing the population, economy, industry, culture and popular elections in Finland. The publication also contains international comparison data.

In 2004, 37 per cent of the total population were aged over 50, while 17 per cent were aged under 15. At the end of the year Finland's population was 5.2 million.
Last year, 5.5 per cent of the population in Finland spoke Swedish as their mother tongue while Russian was the mother tongue of 0.7 per cent of the population.
At the end of 2004, there were 108,346 foreigners living in Finland. Russians were the largest group of foreign nationals with 24,626 persons while Estonians were the second largest with 13,978 persons.
In 2003, there were altogether 228,422 business enterprises in Finland and they employed a total of 1,308,000 persons. Enterprises with fewer than 10 employees made up 93 per cent of all enterprises, and employed 24 per cent of the total labour force of business enterprises. Enterprises with more than 500 employees numbered 259, in other words made up 0.1 per cent of all enterprises, and employed 30 per cent of the total labour force of business enterprises.
The average arable land area of farms (over 1ha) was 31.4 hectares last year. The total number of farms was 70,983, which is 7,907 lower than in 2000 and 58,131 lower than in 1990.
According to preliminary data, the share of nuclear energy of total energy consumption was 16 per cent last year, or the same as one year earlier. The share of oil was 25 per cent and that of wood fuels 20 per cent of all energy consumption.
Preliminary data for 2004 show that 59 per cent of Finland's imports came from the European Union and 58 per cent of Finland's exports went to the EU. The developing countries accounted for 13 per cent of imports and 16 per cent of exports.
Last year, the average price per square metre of dwelling area was €1,037 for detached houses, and the average price for housing plots was €7.9 per square metre.
Public transport accounted for 17 per cent and passenger cars for 82 per cent of the passenger kilometres of domestic transport in 2004. In 1990, the respective figures were 20 and 78 per cent.
According to preliminary data, the share of official development assistance of Finland's GNI was 0.35 per cent in 2004, or the same as in the two previous years.
In 2003, the average monthly pension of pension beneficiaries was €1,027. Men's pensions were 30 per cent higher than women's, on the average. Men's average pension was €1,182 and women's €911.
In June last year, the mean daily temperature in Helsinki was 13.3°C, which is 1.5°C lower than the average for the period between 1971 and 2000.
