Finnish enterprises abroad: nearly 4900 affiliates in 119 countries in 2012.

According to Statistics Finland's data, Finnish enterprises had business activity in 4,883 affiliates located in 119 countries in 2012. Measured by the number of personnel, the activity of affiliates abroad concentrated in Europe and Asia. The personnel abroad totalled over 570,000, of whom nearly one-third were working in EU 15 countries, nearly one-quarter in Asia and Oceania, and almost one-sixth in EU 27 countries. Examined by country, the numbers of personnel were the highest in China, Sweden, Russia and India. These data derive from data collected from enterprises.

Finnish affiliates employed the largest numbers of persons in EU 15 countries, altogether nearly 176,000 persons. In EU 15 countries, the largest industries by the number of personnel were the machinery and metal products industry (36,470 persons), and the paper industry (25,100 persons). Measured by the number of personnel, Finnish affiliates' personnel was the second biggest in Asia and Oceania, numbering good 138,200. The industries with the highest numbers of personnel in Asia and Oceania were the electrical and electronics industry (70,710 persons), and the machinery and metal products industry (35,210 persons). In EU 27 countries, the number of personnel was nearly 93,200 and the biggest industries were the electrical and electronics industry (13,870 persons) and wholesale and retail trade (13,090 persons). Of individual countries, the numbers of personnel in affiliates were the highest in China (68,980 persons), Sweden (67,700 persons), Russia (48,310 persons) and India (40,930 persons). The manufacturing industry was the most significant employer in Finnish affiliates abroad. The numbers of personnel were the highest in affiliates of the electrical and electronics industry (144,970 persons), and the machinery and metal products industry (112,600 persons).

Investments by affiliates abroad into their tangible goods amounted to good EUR 4.0 billion gross. Sixty-nine per cent of the investments were made in Europe and 20 per cent in Asia and Oceania. In Europe, the investments focused on manufacturing industries and totalled close on EUR 1.5 billion. In the EU countries, the largest investments were made by the paper industry (EUR 560 million) and in European countries outside the EU by the chemical industry (EUR 190 million). In Asia and Oceania, investments concentrated in the information and communication activity (EUR 281 million) and the electrical and electronics industry (EUR 196 million). Among individual countries, investments totalled most, or EUR 549.3 million, in Sweden. Examined world-wide, affiliates of the paper industry invested the largest total amount of EUR 671.4 million.

The combined total turnover of Finnish affiliates located abroad amounted to almost EUR 158.6 billion. The figure describes unconsolidated turnover, in other words, it includes, for instance, intra-group trade. Forty-four per cent of the turnover was made in EU 15 countries and 16 per cent in Asia and Oceania. In EU 15 countries, the largest amounts of turnover were generated in wholesale and retail trade (EUR 15.4 billion) and in the paper industry (EUR 14.2 billion). In Asia and Oceania, the industry with the most significant turnover was the electrical and electronic industry (EUR 8,3 billion). Among the industries, the highest turnover world-wide was generated by wholesale and retail trade (EUR 35.6 billion) and by the machinery and metal products industry (EUR 27.5 billion).
