Unemployment higher than average for persons not belonging to a family in 2016
According to the preliminary data of Statistics Finland's employment statistics, 355,000 persons aged 18 to 64 were unemployed (share of the labour force around 14 per cent) at the end of 2016. The share of unemployed persons in the labour force was around 20 per cent for persons not belonging to a family. For spouses of families with children, the corresponding share was about eight per cent.

According to the preliminary data of employment statistics, unemployed persons accounted for nearly 14 per cent of the labour force in 2016. Viewed by family status, the share of unemployed was biggest for those not belonging to a family, around 20 per cent. The share was, in turn, smallest for those with the status of a spouse with children in the family. In this group, the share of unemployed persons was around eight per cent. Children comprise all persons, regardless of age, who live with their parents, or the spouse’s biological or adopted children.
The preliminary data indicate that there were differences in the unemployment of men and women not belonging to a family in 2016: Around 24 per cent of men not belonging to a family in the labour force were unemployed and about 16 per cent of women. In the group of persons with families, the difference between sexes was around one percentage point.
Over 84,000 men not belonging to a family unemployed
At the end of 2016, unemployed men aged 18 to 64 not belonging to a family numbered 84,300 and women 43,300. The number of unemployed men not belonging to a family covers 24 per cent of all unemployed persons.

The 18 to 24 age group was biggest for unemployed men not belonging to a family (11,600 persons). Correspondingly, the smallest age group was formed by men aged 40 to 44 (7,200 persons.) Of women not belonging to a family, unemployed were most those aged 60 to 64, that is, 7,800 persons, and least those aged 40 to 44, in all 2,400 persons.
According to the preliminary data, employed persons accounted for 68 per cent of the population aged 18 to 64. Fifty-five per cent of men not belonging to a family were employed and 62 per cent of women not belonging to a family.
