Finland's preliminary population figure 5,439,741 at the end of July
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of July was 5,439,741. Over the January to July period, Finland's population increased by 13,050 persons, which is 300 persons less than in the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 9,250 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 3,800 persons.
Population increase by month 2011–2013*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to July period, 16,000 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 6,750 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 300 lower and the number of emigrants was 450 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 4,900 of the immigrants and 4,650 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to July period 34,250 children were born, which is 750 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 30,450, which is 300 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 141,450 over the January to July period. Compared with the previous January to July period, the decrease was 6 350 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
