Discussion event on the pricing of Statistics Finland’s research datasets

(5.10.2026)

Dear Partner,

We invite you to a discussion event on the pricing of Statistics Finland’s research datasets on Monday, 9 November 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. The event will be held in Finnish.

At the event, Olli Kärkkäinen, Strategy and Research Director at the Ministry of Finance, will present the findings of the working group that examined the under-recovery of costs in the Research Services. Ville Vertanen, Deputy Director General at Statistics Finland, will outline the pricing plan of the Research Services for 2027.

Statistics Finland has previously communicated the pressures facing the Research Services to increase prices. The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy has stated that government agencies’ fee-based activities should be cost-covering. During the spring and early autumn, alternative solutions for the pricing of the Research Services were examined by a joint working group comprising the Ministry of Finance, Statistics Finland and the VATT Institute for Economic Research. The working group has prepared short-term, medium-term and long-term action plans aimed at mitigating the costs incurred to researchers.

Although the cost recovery of the Research Services has improved, the fees charged to researchers do not yet fully cover the costs of providing the services. Statistics Finland is preparing price increases with the objective of achieving full cost recovery in 2027. Statistics Finland has also explored ways to reduce the costs of the Research Services. According to the current estimates, the overall impact of the price increases would be approximately 30 to 40 per cent.
