The new ready-made dataset EDUC_OPISK_HIST Historical Data on Higher Education Students for 1968–1972 and 1975–1995 has been published and is available through the Statistics Finland's licensing service.
The dataset is based on historical higher education student registers and complements current student data by extending the time series back to the 1960s.
The first part of the dataset includes enrolled higher education students, their background characteristics, and study-related information for the years 1968–1972. The second part continues the time series with a more limited set of variables for the years 1975–1995. Dataset descriptions are available in the TAIKA catalogue.
When using the ready-made dataset, it should be noted that the historical data and their documentation are partly incomplete.

(30.3.2026)
New datasets have been published or will soon be published for several ready-made data modules. These include:
Learn more about new and forthcoming ready-made datasets.
(5.3.2026)
The information in the ready-made datasets concerning employment services is now produced by the KEHA Centre. For this reason, the names of the datasets TEM_TYOKUNTO, TEM_TYONHAKIJA, TEM_TYONHAKU and TEM_TYOPAIKKA have been updated to correspond to the current producer of the data.
The change concerns the names of the dataset folders in FIONA, but it does not affect the data content of the ready-made datasets.
The changes are as follows:
Changes will be introduced to the user licence application process as of 1 February 2026. The changes are explained in more detail in the video below.

(20.2.2026)
The renewal of the Research Services’ pseudonymisation solution is progressing in phases, and the transition to the new pseudonyms will continue until 31 December 2026. A new information page has been published to provide up-to-date information, guidance, and solutions related to challenges in combining old and new identifiers. At the same time, the potential impact of cuts to statistical production on the availability of research datasets is being assessed. A discussion event will be organised for researchers to address these topics. Read the announcement.
Changes to Statistics Finland’s licence practices and application forms (16.1.2026)
Changes will be made to Statistics Finland’s licence practices and application forms in February, with the aim of streamlining the processing of applications and ensuring compliance with data protection legislation. Read the announcement.
A few errors corrected in the pricing table for ready-made datasets (22 Dec 2025)
A few errors were identified in the pricing table for ready-made datasets, where the coarser and more detailed versions of the same dataset had been placed in the wrong pricing categories. In addition, there was a need to adjust the presentation of certain datasets in the table. As a result, the following changes have now been made to the table:
The announcement on Pseydonymisation Updates has been published (19.12.2025)
The pseudonymisation solution of Research Services is being updated in phases during 2025–2026 to strengthen data protection. The update is implemented in two phases: the pseudonymisation of companies and other identifiers has already begun, and the current phase focuses on protecting personal identifiers. Read the announcement.
The announcement Research Services’ data protection project updates in 2025 has been published (8 December 2025)
The revisions that strengthen the data protection of the Research Services will be adopted in early 2026, and a new application form will be introduced in the licensing service on 1 February. In future, applications must include the Dataset specification form and provide more detailed information on the need for the datasets. The process for applying for and distributing ready-made datasets will also be renewed as datasets are limited annually and new annual folders are introduced in FIONA. At the same time, their classification and naming will be updated, as the previous one-off fee/continuous terms will be discontinued. Read the announcement.
Christmas came early: Ready-made datasets based on the KOSKI register are here! (2.12.2025)
Ready-made datasets based on the Finnish National Agency for Education’s KOSKI data repository have been published. The dataset collection includes three modules starting from the statistical year 2018:
Dataset descriptions have been published in the Taika catalog, and the datasets can now be requested through our licencing service.
New aggregated submodules have been published from the ready-made dataset FOLK_MUUTTO Migration data (1.12.2025)
FOLK_MUUTTO ready-made dataset has been aggregated in two new submodules for the following variables: country of departure, country of arrival, citizenship, second citizenship, mother tongue, and country of birth. The change aims to improve data security and reduce the need for tailored data.
Depending on research needs, you may apply for one of the following modules:
Descriptions can be found in the Taika catalog, and the ready-made datasets can now be requested via the licencing service.
Prices for Research Services in 2026 Published (28 November 2025)
New Interface for Managing Computing Resources in FIONA Starting Early 2026 (30 October, 2025)
At the beginning of 2026, FIONA will introduce a new user interface that allows research projects to independently launch and terminate computing resources (virtual machines) for the duration they are needed. This will enable more flexible use of computing power and access to more efficient machines than currently available. Operating system for independently launched machines is Ubuntu.
In the initial phase, the interface will be made available to 30 projects, with the number expanded as needed throughout the year. To register your project among the first 30, please send an email to valtteri.valkonen@stat.fi.
The current model for deploying and managing machines (License Service application) will remain available to all projects as before.
Increases in the prices of the Research Services in 2026 (20 October, 2025)
Statistics Finland will raise the prices of the Research Services in 2026. The prices will be increased by 10 to 20 per cent. The increases will affect the various products in different ways. More detailed information about the changes will be given in a Teams event (in Finnish) on 28 October and an official announcement will be distributed later in English.
Newsletter on current issues has been published (4 September 2025)
New ready-made materials have been published during the summer, along with up-to-date information on changes in pseudonymisation. Reminder to respond to the survey. Read the newsletter.
The grade data in the EDUC_TYHR ready-made dataset has been updated for the years 2020–2023 (28 August, 2025)
Grade data for upper secondary education has not been produced in education statistics after the statistical year 2019. With the introduction of the new KOSKI register (the national data repository for education and training), the EDUC_TYHR dataset has now been updated with the missing grade data for the statistical years 2020–2023. Due to the new data source, the information differs in structure and content from the grade data of previous years.

The dataset is based on the Finnish data from the second round of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) and the register data linked to it.
A description of the dataset can be found in the Taika data catalogue (only in Finnish). The dataset cannot be directly linked to other ready-made datasets, and it will not be updated.
Preliminary information about the discontinuation of the SAS software in Fiona (March 5, 2025)
Due to licencing cost and management reasons, SAS will be discontinued for Fiona's research projects on March 31, 2026. The existing SAS codes and data must therefore be modified for other Fiona platforms. The use of the microsimulation model will continue on SAS for the time being, until the model is converted to another platform.
