FIONA Windows operating systems will be upgraded during 2026

(28.8.2026)

FIONA's virtual machine environments will be upgraded during 2026. The environments will be migrated to a new server platform whose user interface will have the look and feel of a Windows 11 environment.

The migrations will begin in week 37. More detailed information about your project's migration schedule will be provided closer to the migration date. If the proposed schedule is not suitable for your project, or if there are any other requirements or obstacles related to the migration, please contact the project's principal investigator. The principal investigator should communicate any project-specific migration requirements to us on behalf of the project.

Instructions related to the migration of virtual machine environments are available on our website and will be updated as needed as the migrations progress.

The new environment will be deployed during your project's migration week. The old environment will be shut down during the testing period and will then be fully replaced by the new environment.

After deployment, we ask you to test the new environment as soon as possible and verify:

  • the functionality of applications
  • any customisations
  • normal working processes

Information about the end of the testing period will be provided once the schedule for your project environment has been finalised. Any issues reported during the testing period will be corrected as part of the migration process. If no issues are reported during the testing period, the new environment will be considered approved.

Before the migration, we ask you to notify us of:

  • any unnecessary software, applications or customisations in your virtual machine environment
  • any need to retain older software versions

In addition, we recommend that you log in to your project environment at least once after the June maintenance break. Logging in ensures that your user-specific files and profile information have been transferred to the network drive and will also be available in the new environment. If you have not logged in to your project environment since the June maintenance break, we recommend doing so as soon as possible.
