In April 2011 Finns travelled to Lapland or went on a cruise to Estonia

This April, Finnish residents made over half a million trips with paid accommodation in Finland, which is nearly 40 per cent more than one year previously. One fifth of these trips were headed to Lapland. Cruises to Estonia were also popular and their number doubled from last year's April. The number of trips abroad with overnight stay in the destination country increased by ten per cent from the respective time period of the year before.

In April Finnish residents made 534,000 overnight leisure trips abroad. In all, 378,000 of them included one or more overnights in the country of destination, twenty-one per cent in Estonia and nine per cent in Sweden. Most of the cruises including overnights on board only were to Sweden and Estonia.

Finnish residents made 2.7 million leisure trips in Finland. This is 13 per cent up on the corresponding period in the year before. Most of the trips, or 2.2 million, included free accommodation at one’s own free-time residence, with relatives or friends or in some other type of free accommodation.

These preliminary data are based on Statistics Finland’s Finnish Travel Survey for which 1,456 persons aged 15 to 74 permanently resident in Finland were interviewed in May.

The final annual data on the Finnish Travel Survey are published on the homepage of the statistics in June following the statistical reference year.
