Unemployment rate 8.4 per cent in June

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in June 2011 was 237,000, which was 11,000 lower than one year ago. At 8.4 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than one year earlier. There were 24,000 more employed persons than in June of the previous year. In the second quarter of the year (April to June), the unemployment rate was 8.8 per cent, having been 9.6 per cent in the corresponding period of 2010.

In June 2011, the number of employed persons was 2,581,000 which was 24,000 higher than a year earlier. This change fits within the margin of error for the number of employed persons (± 31,000). There were around 15,000 more employed men and 10,000 more employed women than in June 2010. The number of employed persons increased in the areas of all other Regional State Administrative Agencies (AVI) apart from that of Western and Inland Finland.

In June, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 71.7 per cent, which was 0.8 percentage points higher than one year earlier. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.7 per cent. From last year’s June, men’s employment rate rose by one percentage point to 74.1 per cent and women’s by 0.6 percentage points to 69.3 per cent.

According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 237,000 unemployed in June 2011, i.e. 11,000 fewer than in June of the year before. The number of unemployed men was 126,000 and that of women 111,000.

At 8.4 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.4 percentage points lower in June than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 8.5 per cent and women’s 8.3 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 7.7 per cent. This June, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 20.4 per cent, which was 1.2 percentage points lower than in the previous year’s June. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people fell to 19.5 per cent.

Labour Force Survey data for the second quarter of 2011

The average number of employed persons in the second quarter of 2011 was 2,517,000, or approximately 32,000 higher than in the corresponding quarter of 2010. The industries where the number of employed persons went up included human health and social work activities, construction and education. The number of employed persons decreased in manufacturing, and in transportation and storage activities.

The average number of unemployed persons in the second quarter of 2011 was 244,000, which was 19,000 lower than in the April to June period of 2010. The unemployment rate in the second quarter of the year was 8.8 per cent, which was 0.7 percentage points lower than in the respective period of 2010.

The number of hours worked by employed persons was around 1.1 per cent higher in the second quarter of 2011 than twelve months previously.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of June 2011, there were altogether 253,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 22,000 lower than in June 2010.

Unemployment decreased from the previous year in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres (ELY). The number of unemployed job seekers decreased most in South Ostrobothnia (-14%), Ostrobothnia (-14%) and Kainuu (-12%). At the end of June, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 11,000, which was 6,000 lower than twelve months earlier.

The total number of persons covered by labour market policy measures was 101,000 at the end of June, which was 9,000 higher than in June of the year before. Altogether 3.6 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy measures.

There were 35,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 6,000 lower than in last year's June. During this June, 38,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which was 5,000 more than in June 2010.
