Finland's preliminary population figure 5,509,717 at the end of August
New releases will not be produced on preliminary population statistics any more in 2017. Revised figures concerning 2017 will be released at a later date to be announced separately.
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,509,717 at the end of August. Our country's population increased by 6,420 persons during January-August. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 8,005. The number of births was 1,585 lower than that of deaths.
Population increase by month 2014–2017*
During January-August, 34,117 children were born, which is 1,859 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2016. The number of deaths was 35,702, which is 15 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary statistics for August, 17,561 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 9,556 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 4,262 lower and the number of emigrants 1,959 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 5,550 of the immigrants and 6,484 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 194,742 during January-August. Compared with the corresponding period in 2016, the increase was 3,635 migrations according to the municipal division of 2017.
